MR. GOODRICH ENDS LIFE WITH SHOT-GUN, Trips Trigger With Poker- Despondent Over Ill-Health, for Months
Tripping the trigger with a poker, Emmet S. Goodrich, 63 years old, yesterday used a shot-gun to end his life in his home on Shepard Street. He had been in ill-health for several months and this is thought to have made him despondent. Corner Leigh, after investigating the suicide, decided an inquest unnecessary. Mr. Goodrich placed the muzzle of the gun in his mouth and the load tore away part og his head. The explosion attracted members of the family, but he was dead ere they reached his side. Ten years ago, Mt. Goodrich came to Petersburg from North Carolina. He had been employed at the Seward trunk factory and was twice married. Among the sever children surviving who were born of the first union is Mr. T.C. Goodrich, proprietor of the Bell Food Store on Harrison Street. I am researching my family tree & know that James Rives (Reeves) Watkins & Martha Talley were my great-great grandparents of Warrenton, NC. Is there a family connection to the Goodrich Watkins family.
I am especially trying to find anything about Annie L. Stiff who married my great grandfather, Thomas Reeves Watkins & for who my father was named for.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Answer to question 1….Yes, the Watkins/Goodrich link exists…
James R. Watkins and Martha Talley were parents of James William Watkins who married Josephine Spencer Owen…They were parents of Emma Josephine Watkins who married Emmett Spencer Goodrich.
Answer to question 2…James R Watkins and Martha Talley were also parents of eight other children to include Thomas Reeves Watkins who married Annie Stiff ..They had at least one child Elizabeth Watkins..
Also to Mickey…There seems to be some confusion on one of the children of Emmett Spencer Goodrich and Alice Graham Wynn…the family bible lists Annie Viorace Goodrich as being born on Aug 1 1884 and does not mention A Vivian Goodrich also born on Aug 1 according to your records…Perhaps she didn’t like the name Annie Viorace and changed it to Vivian???(I can understand)
