William F. Fletcher and Susan Warburton

William F. Fletcher was born in May 1837 in Henrico, Richmond, Virginia. His parents were Philip Montauge Fletcher and Philadelphia Gordon. William F. Fletcher married Susan Warbuton on 9 May 1860. She was born in 1840 and was the daughter of Charles Warbriton and Nancy Seaton. Susan died on 29 Dec 1874 in Richmond, VA. William then married Alma Howard on 16 Dec 1897. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Howard. William F. Fletcher died at 11pm at 14 South Short Street in Richmond of throat cancer on 22 Sept 1900. William was a stone contractor.

William and Susan had at least five children:

1. Florence E. Fletcher (Aug 1861-?) married a Mr. Douglass but was widowed by the 1900 census with no children.

2. William E. Fletcher (May 1863-29 Aug 1931) married Essie Ford and had at least seven children (Raymond F Fletcher, Emmett Linwood Fletcher, William Edward Fletcher, Albin Fletcher, Gracie L Fletcher, Virginia Fletcher, and Ermine Fletcher).

3. Nannie Bell Fletcher (1866-13 Oct 1905) married John L Miller on 20 Feb 1884 and had at least seven children (Susie Estelle Miller, Lottie B Miller, Myrtle L Miller, Bernard Miller, Unnamed Miller, John E Miller, and Kenneth M Miller).

4. Ida A Fletcher (1869-?) married Robert B. Northern on 23 Jun 1896.

5. Ella Maude Fletcher (Oct 1872-?) married Johnathan S. Jones on 29 April 1903.

William and Alma had one child:

1. Dorthy Fletcher (1898-?)

Mr. William F. Fletcher, of 14 south Short street, has been confined to his room by sickness for about three weeks. He is still quite ill, though his condition is considered somewhat improved.

Mr. William F. Fletcher, of No. 14 South Short Street, who has been quite sick at home for some time, has been removed to Kellum’s Hospital for treatment.

William F. Fletcher. Mr. William F. Fletcher died at his residence, No. 14 South Short Street, at 11 o’clock last night. He was aged sixty four years. Mr. Fletcher was a citizen of Richmond, and a prominent stone contractor. He leaves a large family to survive him. The funeral will take place from Asbury Methodist Church to-morrow afternoon at 4 o’clock.

Funeral Service of Mr. Fletcher. The funeral of Mr. William F. Fletcher, whose death Saturday night, at his residence, No. 14 south Short Street, was announced in Sunday’s  Dispatch, took place from Asbury Methodist Church yesterday afternoon at 4 o’clock. Rev. Dr. Maxey conducted the service, and Captian Frank Cunningham sang the beautiful and touching hymn, “Only Remembered.” The following were the pall-bearers: Honorary- Messrs. R.N. Northen, George A Debold, A. Jennings, A.L. Billings, R.R. Padgett, -. Jackson, Albin Netherwood, Joseph Taylor. Active- Messrs. William F. Jones, Alonzo L. Phillips, Jackson Bolton, Phillip P. Taliaferro, Frank T. Bates, W.E. Saxton, D.F. Craddock, Creed Davis. Mr. Fletcher, who was a well-known contractor, had been a great suffer for about two years from cancer of the neck. He went to Baltimore a little over a year ago, and was operated on at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, but the operation not being successful, he then went to the Kellum Cancer Hospital for treatment. This also proved unavailing and he succumbed at last to the dreadful disease, after patiently bearing his suffering with Christian fortitude. Mr. Fletcher was a man of fine character. He was a loyal friend and a devoted husband and father.

Funeral Services. The funeral of Mr. William F. Fletcher took place yesterday afternoon at 4 o’clock from Asbury Methodist Church.

1860: William F. Fletcher is 23 and Susan is 20. William is a laborer. Also living with them are Marcella Eubank (who is 8 ) and W.H. Eubank (who is 6 in this one).

1870: William F. Fletcher is 33 and Susan is 30. William is a farmer. Florence E is 1o, William E. is 7, Nannie B. is 4 and Ida A is 1. Also living with them is William H Eubank who is 12 in this one. The Eubanks are Susan’s niece and nephew.

1880: Cannot find them.

1900: William Fletcher is 63 and a stone contractor. Susan has died, and he is now married to Alma and had been for 3 years. Also living with them are William’s children Maude Fletcher who is 27, Florence Douglass who is 28 and widowed and a store keeper, and He and Alma’s child Dorthy who is 2. Also living with them is James M Gordan who is 54 and has been married for 26 years. He is a railroad engineer. I believe Ida is living either next door or also with them. She has married Robert Northern, they have been married for 3 years and he is a sales man.
