Elijah Hiram Herschel Blick and Margaret Jackson Arrington

Elijah Hiram Blick was born 1804-1810 in Virginia to James Blick and Catherine Lanier. He married Margaret Jackson Arrington on the 12th of June 1832 in Nash, North Carolina. She was born in 1811 in Nash, North Carolina to Joseph Arrington and Margaret Jackson Arrington. Elijah died in November 1877 in Brunswick, Virginia. Margaret Blick died in 1884. Elijah was a farmer, lawyer, teacher and a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1842-1845.

HOLLY GROVE MALE SCHOOL

The exercises of this school, at the residence of the subscriber, in the county of Brunswick, about six miles North-east of Lawrenceville, will be resumed on the first of February next. The school will be conducted by a competent classical and Mathematical teacher, a gentleman of steady habits and unexceptionable morals. Particular attention will be paid to the morals and deportment of those entrusted to my care.

Terms per session of five months:

Board, including every necessary except lights $50.00

Tuition in Classes $20.00

Here is the will of E.H.H. Blick:

In the name of God Amen. I, Elijah H.H. Blick of the county of Brunswick, of state of Virginia do hereby make my last will and testament in the following manner to wit:

First: After the payment of all my just debts, funeral expenses, &etc., I give to my beloved wife Margaret I. Blick during her widowhood the following property (towit). All my lands, two horses chosen by her,  four cows and calves, two sows, six shoats, two plows and gear for same, household and kitchen furniture, fan mill, and a yoke of oxen, hereby granting to my son, Joseph A. Blick, my daughter Mary E. Goodrich the privilege of using such parts of said land as is hereinafter given them respectively by paying to her a certain part of the annual profits of said land as may be agreed upon  by the parties and to my son George R. Blick the privilege of using the part of said land as hereinafter given to my grandson, William H Blick, on the same principal, as before mentioned, hereby requesting my beloved wife to furnish said grandson William H. Blick food and raiment, requiring him to do necessary duties and requesting her to give him as liberal an education as his and her means will permit- In the event of my wife’s marriage I give to her such portion of my estate as the la prescribes during her natural life. The remainder of said estate after the withdraw of said legal portion I desire to be divided in accordance with the principal of subsequent provisions.

2nd; After the decease of my beloved wife I give  to my daughter Mary E Goodrich one half a parcel or tract of land lying north east of Reedy Creek and extending to said creek and up said creek to Mallory’s line, the whole tract containing upwards of five hundred acres and adjoining the lands of Alexr. Mallory, Henry Parrish, Jas. Jolly and tract on which I reside; Also I giver her a bond executed by her husband Thos. W. Goodrich, to me for the sum of eight hundred dollars originally which I give to her and her heirs forever.

3rd: I give to my son Joseph A. Blick during his life, a parcel or lot of land lying South West of my residence extending from a road called Wilson’s Road and including a parcel of wood land on the west excepting a small portion lying North of a small branch called Coffeehouse Spring B ranch, the said lot or parcel of land adjoining the lands of Jno. E. Shell, Needham S. Cheely, Martha Smith, Daly’s Creek or branch and the part I live on and after his decease I give the said land to his children and then to their heirs forever. Also I release a bond and all other claims against him for monies.

I give to my son George R. Blick the tract or parcel of land on which I reside and lying between the two creeks and Wilson’s Road on the west including a small piece of wood land lying north of the Coffee Spring branch and adjoining the lands of Martha Smith, also ten acres of 1 and on Reedy Creek as a mill seat, also one bed, two pillows and a bolster, to him and his heirs forever.

4th. I give to my grandson William H. Blick on half the tract or parcel of land lying North East of Reedy Street the other half of which is bequested to my daughter Mary E. Goodrich, the whole of said tract containing upwards of five hundred acres, bounded by the land of Alexr. Mallory, Henry Parrish, Jas. Jolly and tract on which I reside also one bed and bolster, two pillows and a double barreled gun, provided he shall attain the age of twenty one years or leave a lawful heir of his body and provided further that he release to me or my estate what ever loss may have been sustained by me as executor of his father owing to the depreciation of confederate money to him and his heirs forever. Should my grandson die before he attains the age of twenty one and without leaving a lawful heir of his body in such an event I desire that the above mentioned land and property and such other property as he may be entitled to under the provisions of this instrument, at of writing shall be divided equally between my children before named which I give to them and their heirs forever.

5th. All the rest of my estate of what nature or kind soever it may be not having been particularly disposed of I desire shall be equally divided between my children and grandson herein before named which I give to them and their heirs forever.

Lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my son George R. Blick Executor of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other former wills or testaments by me heretofore made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this fifth day of November in the year 1874. Signed sealed and acknowledged. -Elijah H.H. Blick. (Seal).

Codicil, made this 4th day of September 1876, It is my wish and I hereby direct, that the property bequeathed to my son George R. Blick in this instrument, shall be held by him upon the same terms and conditions as are imposed in the bequest to my son Joseph A. Blick. I also direct that the property bequeathed to my daughter, Mary E. Goodrich, shall be hers separate and apart from the estate of her husband, and shall be held also upon the same terms and conditions as are herein imposed in the bequests to my two sons. In the division of the land bequeathed to my daughter and grandson William H. Blick, I direct my grandson shall have allotted to him the southern portion of said land including the buildings. Witness my hand and seal this 4th Sept. 1876.- E.H.H. Blick. (Seal).

Codicil made this 15th date of April 1877. It is my wish and desire that my daughter, Mary E. Goodrich, shall take and posses any land or interest in land, in Dinwiddie County, Va., that may accrue to me, ore to my estate from certain claims against Lemual Peebles, or Peebles Plumber & Company, of Petersburg, Va, and that my said Daughter shall hold the same upon the conditions stated in the codicil made Sept. 4th 1876, in regard to the property bequeathed to her. I also direct that a horse, saddle and bridle, or the equivalent of one hundred and twenty dollars in money, shall be given to my grandson William H. Blick, when he becomes 21 years of age, out of my estate. Witness my hand and seal this 15th day of April 1877. -E.H.H. Blick (Seal).

Elijah and Margaret had at least 6 children:

1. Mary Elizabeth Blick (19 Jun 1833- 24 Apr 1904) who married Thomas Washington Goodrich and had at least nine children (Emmett Spencer Goodrich, Ella A Goodrich, Josie T Goodrich, Willie Goodrich, James Hiram Goodrich, Margaret Arrington Goodrich, Mary Timothy Goodrich and Thomas Winston Goodrich).

2. James Blick (1835-bef 1874)

3. Joseph Arrington Blick (1836-3 Nov 1914) who married Mary Blount Gibbon in 1859 and had three children (Margaret R Blick, Mary Blount Blick, Anna Florence Blick). He then married Lucy Eleanor Trotter on 5 June 1866 and had six more children (Evelyn Blick, Lucy ‘Lula’ Trotter Blick, Joseph Herschel Blick, Isham Thomas Blick, James Thrower Blick and Thomas Edward Spicer Blick). He then married Rosa Ida Parrish in 1885 and had at least  eight more children (Edward Claiborne Blick, Leslie B Blick, William R Blick, Rosa Maude Blick, Eula W Blick, Atwell Blick, John Arrington Blick and Gladys Price Blick).

6. George Blick (1843-1906) who married Martha Ann Cornelia Lucy and had 14 children (Martha Blick, Samuel H Blick, Lida Blick, Cornelia E Blick, George Blick, Thomas W Blick, Tempie Blick, Elijah Blick, Vernon H Blick, Willie Blick, Maggie Blick, Julia Blick, Julia Blick, Lillian Blick).

1840: E.H.H. Blick has a household with the following people: 3 free white males under the age of 5, 1 free white male age 30-40, 1 free white male age 50-60, 1 free white female age 5-10, 1 free white female age 20-30, 13 male slaves under age 10, 7 male slaves age 10-24, 2 male salves 24-35, 5 male slaves age 35-55, 1 male slave age 55-100, 6 female slaves under age 10, 6 female slaves age 10-24, 5 female salves 24-35, 3 female slaves age 35-55, and 3 female slave age 55-100 for a total of 51 slaves.

1850:

Elijah H Blick is 40 and owns real estate worth $2,317. He is married to Martha J Blick who is 38. Mary Blick is 17. James Blick is 15 and has attended school within the last year. Joseph Blick is 14, Benjamin Blick is 13. Also living with them were Flavius Weare who is 16 and attended school in the last year and Robert W. Spencer who is 12 and also attended school within the last year. All were from Virginia. The 1850 Slave Schedule also shows him with 48 slaves.

1860:

Elijah Blick is 54 and a farmer with real estate worth $6,000 and a personal estate worth $42,000. His wife Margaret is 52 and is listed as being born in North Carolina. Also living with them are sons William A Blick who is 21 and a farmer, and George R who is 18 and attended school in the last year. Elijah Blick owned 57 slaves during the census.

1870:

Hiram Blick is 66 and still a farmer. His real estate is worth $3,000 and his personal estate is now worth 98.5% percent less at just 1,000, obviously due to the abolishment of slavery. Margaret Blick is 55. Also living with them is William Blick who is 9 and attended school in the last year.

1880:

Elijah has died, and Margaret J Blick is 70 and a farmer. Also living with her is William Blick who is 19 and helps on the farm. They live next door to Margaret and Elijah’s son George Blick.
