Matilda Halter and Daniel Becker and Jacob Christiansen

Matilda Halter was born abt 1859 in Newark, NJ to Henry Halter and Regina Huff. She first married Daniel Becker on 9 Jun 1878 in Newark, NJ. Daniel Becker died on 26 Apr 1889 in Newark, NJ. She then married Jacob Christiansen on 13 Dec 1891 in Newark, NJ. He died in the between 1900-1910. It is unknown at this time when Matilda died.

Census Records:

1880: Daniel Becker is 29. Matilda Becker is 20. Regina Becker is 9 months old.

1900: Jacob Christiansen is 41 and a carpenter. Matilda Christiansen is 40 and a grocer. Matilda’s son Charles Becker is 13 and the only child from her first marriage that has survived. Matilda Christiansen is 7, Jacob Christiansen is 5 and Antoinette is 2.

1910: Record is pretty unreadable.

1920: Matilda Christiansen is 60 and a widow. Her son Charles Becker is 32 and a jeweler. He daughter Matilda Christiansen is also living with her.

William ‘Balthazar’ Huber and Helena Fredericka Halter

William ‘Balthazar’ Huber was born on 11 July 1851 in Giswil, Kanton Obwalden, Switzerland. His parents were Felix and Franziska Zurmuhle. His Godparents were Balthazar Huber and Josefa Huber (his Father’s brother and sister). He married Helena Fredericka Halter on 10 April 1882. She was born on 11 March 1862 in Newark, NJ and was the daughter of Henry ‘Wilhelm’ Halter and Regina Huff. He, like his father, was an ice dealer in Newark, NJ. Helena died on 16 March 1938 in Newark, NJ and William died on 3 Oct 1927 in Newark,NJ. He died on accident on ice wagon. He was at rear of wagon and someone pulled on the horses reins in the front. They moved and William was thrown off the back of the wagon to the pavement. He died a few days later of internal injuries. They are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Hillside, NJ (graves near 10th street).

In 1920, the family was living at 267 Jelliff Avenue, Newark, Essex County, New Jersey.

In 1930, the family was living at 133 Franklin Street, Hillside, Union County, New Jersey.

Helena Fredericka Halter Huber

William Huber’s passenger records and census records for 1880 are on his parents page. Helena’s census records until 1895 are on her parent’s page.

1895- NJ state census record doesn’t show much, but it does show William Huber, Lena Huber, and their children William Huber, Louis Huber, Lena Huber, Matilda ‘Tillie’ Huber, and Ruth Huber.

1900- William Huber is 45 and an ice dealer, Helena is 38, William is 16, Louis is 15, Lena is 13, Matilda ‘Tillie’ is 10, Ruth is 7, and Rosie is 2.

1910- William Huber is 57 and isn’t working. Helena is 45. Matilda is 20, Ruth is 18, Rose is 12, Carrie is 8. They are living next door to their daughter Lena who is 23 and her husband Harry W. Streep who is 25, and their son Harry Streep.

1920- William is 67 and an ice dealer. Lena is listed as 57. Living with them are their daughter Ruth who is 26, her husband Edward Walters who is 29 and their son Edward.

1930- Lena Huber is 68. She is living with her daughter Rose (who is 31) and her husband Roscoe Mullican (who is 29) and children Wilma Mullican who is 11, Roscoe Jr. who is 9 and William who is 4. They are living next to Lena’s son William Huber (who is 46) and his family Annie Huber (who is 45), Living, Julia Huber (who is 14), and Living.

William Balthazar Obituary

Huber- On Tuesday, October 18, 1927, William Huber, aged 75 years, beloved husband of Lena Huber (nee Holder [HALTER]). Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral serviced on Friday afternoon, October 21, at 2 o’clock, at his residence, 133 Minnehaha avenue, Hillside, N.J. Interment in Woodland Cemetery.

2. Louis Huber (23 May 1885- 29 March 1959) married Fannie Donahue and had 3 children (Louis Lawrence II Huber, Margaret Huber, and William James Huber)

3. Helena Huber (16 November 1886-9 May 1983) married Harry Streep and had one child (Harry Streep Jr.)

4. Matilda ‘Tillie’ Huber (19 March 1890-11 April 1985) married Charles Bausewein and had 2 children (Charles Harry Bausewein and Helen Matilda Bausewein)

5. Ruth Huber (Feb 1892-1932) married Edward Walters and had two children (Edward Joseph Walters and Harry Walters)

6. Rose Huber (2 August 1898-21 January 1983) married Roscoe Irvin Mullican and had 4 children (Wilhelmina Gertrude Mullican, Roscoe Irvin Mullican Jr, William Ruth Mullican, and Leroy Melvin Carl Mullican)

7. Caroline “Carrie” Huber (22 Febuary 1902-19 August 1919)

Regina Huff and Henry Halter and Frederick Barth

Regina Huff was born in 1827 in Kobenz, Rhineland, Germany. Her father was Dr. John L Huff. He was doctor to the queen (of who, I am not sure). While he was visiting his daughter in Newark, NJ he saved a neighbor girl by throwing his jacket over her because she was on fire. He was also a missionary to Africa. She had an aunt that lived in Stuttgart.

Regina Huff first married Henry L (Wilhelm ?) Halter. He was born in 1824 on the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. He was a cabinet maker and teacher. He died on 03 Jan 1881 in Newark, New Jersey.

1. Dorthy Halter married Charles Barker and had no children.

2. Henry Halter (born in 1864 in Newark, NJ) and died on 04 Feb 1898.

3. Matilda Halter (born Nov 1859 in Newark,NJ) married Daniel Becker on 9 Jun 1878 in Newark, NJ and had at least four children (Regina Becker, Fred Becker, Daniel Becker and Charles Becker) and then married Jacob Christiansen on 13 Dec 1891 in Newark,NJ and had at least four more children (Matilda Christiansen, Jacob Christiansen, Henry Christiansen, and Antoinette Christiansen).

4. Politorius (Paul) Halter (born abt 1866 in Newark,NJ) married Elma McGarvey in 1901. They had at least one son named Fredrick B Halter.

5. Helena Fredericka Halter (born 11 March 1862 in Newark,NJ and died 16 March 1938 in Hillside, NJ) married William Huber on 10 Apr 1892 and had 9 children: William Huber, Louis Huber, Helen Huber, Matilda Huber, Ruth Huber, Rose Huber, Caroline Huber, Henry Huber, and Mamie Huber.

6. Fredrick Halter (1874- 24 Feb 1874)

Regina then married Fredrick Barth (born 1843 in Bavaria and died in 1902 in NJ). Fredrick Barth is believed to be from the Haeberle and Barth Funeral Homes family. Regina ran a tavern in Newark with Fredrick Barth. He was a Civil War veteran that served in Co A 2nd NJ Calvary. At his military funeral, when the guns were fired, his step-granddaughter Rose Huber screamed, said that she had been shot and fell to the ground. Regina died on the 3rd of March 1899 in Newark, New Jersey.

Census Records:

1860- Shows Henry Halter at 36 and a cabinetmaker, Regina is 28 and listed as from Prussia, Matilda is 11 months, John L Hoff is 56 and a surgeon from Prussia. In the same house, there are also a John Mernu? who is 27 and a lockmaker, Fredericke Mernu? who is 19 and a Fredrick Bart who is 18 and also a lockmaker (might be Regina’s second husband?)

1870- Shows Henry Halter at age 46 and a carpenter, Regine is 38, Mathilde is 10, Lena is 8, Heindrick is 6, Politorius is 4, and Fredrick Barth is 27 and a locksmith.

1880- Shows Fred Barth who is 37 and a toolmaker, Regina Barth is 48, Lena Halter is 18, Henry Halter is 14, and Boliva? is 12.

1900- Regina has died, and and Frederick Barth is now 57 a toolmaker, and living with his? son Bolly who is 33, Mary Dogter is a servant and born in Feb 1851, she is from Germany and came to America in 1875. Two lodgers are also living with them.
