Matthew Garrigan and Elizabeth Ann Smith

Matthew Garrigan was born around 1834 in Smithstown, County Mead, Ireland to Owen and Ann Garrigan. He married Elizabeth Ann Smith on 1 Mar 1859 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Newark, New Jersey. Elizabeth was born around on 25 Feb 1838 in Newark, New Jersey to Matthew Smith and Bridget Carey. Matthew died in Newark on 29 September 1888 and was a silverplater at the time. His son Eugene and son in law Charles Seelman ran E.F. Garrigan & company who were electro platers and most likely in the same line of business.

They had at least 11 children:

1. Mary Garrigan (9 Oct 1860-) who married Julius Totams on 4 May 1885 in Newark, New Jersey.

2. Eugene F Garrigan (13 May 1862-after 1889) who married Julia Seelmann on 10 Apr 1883 in Newark, New Jersey and had at least three children (Anna Garrigan, Mariam Garrigan, and Crescentia Juliana Garrigan).

3. Anna Garrigan (30 Jul 1864-).

4. Matthew James Garrigan (9 Apr 1866-) who married Mary Anita Leonard on 23 Sept 1891 in Newark, New Jersey.

5. Elizabeth ‘Lilley’ Garrigan (1 Feb 1868-).

6.William T Garrigan (16 Mar 1870-9 Jul 1913) who married Eleanor Johnson/Johnston on 27 Oct 1894 in Newark, New Jersey and had at least three children (Clara Garrigan, Mary C Garrigan, and Edward Garrigan).

7. Thomas Garrigan (26 Mar 1870-).

8. Grace Agnes Garrigan (1 May 1872- 14 Feb 1912).

9. Theresa Garrigan (4 Apr 1874-).

10. Sarah E Garrigan (21 Apr 1875-).

11. Edward Joseph Garrigan (20 Oct 1877-).

1860 Census: See parents records, but Matthew and Elizabeth are living with Elizabeth’s parents.

1870 Census: Matthew Garrigan is 35 and working at Sad Hardware Manufacturing. He has real estate valued at $10,000 and a personal estate of $6,000. His wife Elizabeth is 30 and keeing house. Mary is 9 and  at school. Eugene is 8 and also at school. Annie is 6, Matthew is 4, Lilley is 2 and William is 2 months old.

1880 Census: Matthew Garrigan is 45 and is working at Sadley Hardware. Elizabeth is 40. Mary Garrigan is 18, Eugene Garrigan is 16 and working at Stair Ends, Matthew Garrigan is 14, Lilly Garrigan is 12, William Garrigan is 10, Grace Garrigan is 6, Theresa Garrigan is 4, Sarah Garrigan is 3 and Edward Garrigan is 1.

Thomas Smith and Hannah Gorham

Thomas Smith was born around 1720. He married Hannah Gorham on 14 Dec 1754 in Stamford, Connecticut by Rev. Whitmore. Hannah Gorham was the daughter of George Gorham and Hannah Banks. She was born on 19 Feb 1728 in Rye, New York. Thomas Smith died on 28 Mar 1772 and Hannah died on 17 Aug 1807 in Rye, New York.

They had at least two children:

1. Samuel Smith (2 Aug 1755-1818) who married Margaret Litcholt and had at least seven children (Thomas Smith, Mary Smith, Gorham Smith, Garrett Smith, Abraham Smith, Lewis Smith and Edward Smith).

2. Anne Smith (Aug 1762-21 Nov 1815) who married Tyler White Raymond and had at least five children (Hannah Raymond, George Raymond, Charles Raymond, Thomas Fairweather Raymond, Joseph Gorham Raymond).

Thomas Smith and Jane McElroy

Thomas Smith was born on 21 Jan 1802 in Warwick, NY. He was the son of Samuel Smith and Margaret Litcholt. He married Jane McElroy. She was born on 30 Nov 1806. She died on 31 Aug 1883. Thomas died in the 1870’s.

Census Records:

1860: Thomas Smith is 59 and Jane Smith is 53. Ellen Smith is 19, and Caroline Smith is 14. They are in Warwick, Orange, New York.

1870: Thomas Smith is 68 and is now blind. Jane Smith is 63.

1880: Jane Smith is now widowed and living next door to her son Cornelius Smith.She is 72.

They had seven children:

1. Margaret A Smith (15 November 1830-22 July 1897) married George R. Furman and had 13 children (Sarah J Furman, Sidney Furman, Emily Furman, Thomas Furman, William Bunton Furman, Harvey Furman, Frank Furman, Jacob B Furman, Mary E Furman, George Jan Furman, Nelson Furman, Hettie A Furman and Samuel Furman).

2. Samuel Smith (abt 1834-?)

3. William Smith (abt 1836-9 Feb 1910)

4. Ellen Smith (1841-)

5. Jonas Curtis Smith (1843-1916) who married Mary Meed and had at least four children (Myrtle Smith, Jay Smith, Rolf Smith, and Earl Smith).

6. Cornelius Smith (1844-?) married Mary E and had at least three children (Thomas Smith, Jane Smith and Clara Smith).

7. Caroline Smith (1848-)

Samuel Smith and Margaret Litcholt

Samuel Smith was born in Stamford, Connecticut (or Warwick, NY) on 2 Aug 1755. His parents were Thomas Smith and Hannah Gorham. He married Margaret Litcholt on 14 March 1801. He died in 1818 in Warwick, NY. Margaret Litcholt may have been born in 1785 and died in 1850. Samuel Smith served as a private in the Orange County Militia during the Revolution, in Hay’s regiment. From Fernow in the Revolution page 476. Haverstraw Precint Regt. (now Rockland Co.) is where he was located. He is also a descendant of John Howland of the Mayflower through his mother Hannah Gorham. Samuel and his family are listed in John Howland of the Mayflower, Vol I by Elizabeth Pearson White on page 563.

They had at least seven children all born in Warwick, NY:

1. Thomas Smith (21 Jan 1802-1870’s) married Jane McElroy and had seven children (Cornelius Smith, Jonas Smith, Samuel Smith, William Smith, Margaret A Smith, Ellen Smith, and Caroline Smith).

2. Mary Smith (15 May 1804-?)

3. Gorham Smith (3 Oct 1806-17 Dec 1892) married Magdaline Ackerson and had at least two children (Jamima Smith and John Hyatt Smith).

4. Garrett Smith (26 Aug 1808-?)

5. Abraham Smith (24 Jul 1811-?) married Hetty Hawkins and had at least one child (James E Smith).

6. Lewis Smith (28 Nov 1816-?)

7. Edward Smith (17 Oct 1818-?)

George Furman and Margaret Smith

George R. Furman was born on 28th of Feb. 1822 in Rockland County/Warwick, NY. He married Margaret A. Smith on 20 Oct 1849. George’s parents were Hezekiah (born abt 1790 in NY) and Sarah (born abt 1795) Furman. Margaret Smith was born on 15 Dec 1930 in Warwick, Orange, NY. Her parents were Thomas Smith and Jane McElroy. George Furman died in Feb 1881 in Warwick,NJ. Margaret Smith died 22 Jul 1897 in Patterson, NJ.

1. Sarah J Furman (15 Oct 1850-29 Oct 1915) who married Edward S. Quackenbush on 17 Oct 1871 and had at least five children (Benjamin B Quackenbush, Joshua W. Quackenbush, Alice Quackenbush, Maggie M. Quackenbush and George Quackenbush). She then married Charles DeGraw in abt 1895 and had one more child (Beulah DeGraw).

2. Sidney Furman (23 Aug 1852-9 Jan 1915) who married Emile Porter on 2 Mar 1882 and had at least five children (Margaret Furman, Oscar W Furman, Mable Furman, William Furman and Stanley L Furman).

3. Emily Furman (29 Jul 1854-21 Apr 1858)

4. Thomas Furman (9 Jan 1856-5 May 1940) who married Sarah Catherine (Kittie) Winship on 4 Dec 1878 and had at least four children (Elsie M Furman, Charles Roy Furman, Clarence T Furman and Alta Belle (Peg) Furman).

5. William Bunton Furman (13 Feb 1857-20 Mar 1934) who married Emma Jane Stacy on 24 Sept 1878 and had at least seven children (Maude Furman, Jay William Furman, Winnifred Furman, Ruby Furman, Pearl Furman, Margaret Furman and Grace Furman).

6. Harvey Furman (2 May 1859-15 Jan 1926) who married Hannah Beatrice Brown on 18 Dec 1880 and had at least nine children (Anna M Furman, Henrietta (Hettie) Furman, Mayme (Mamie) Furman, Lee Furman, Stella Furman, Harvey Everett Furman and Morris Furman and Two Infant Twin Boys).

7. Frank Furman (17 Jun 1860-25 May 1862)

9. Mary E Furman (3 Jan 1863-10 Feb 1940) who married Frank Vandewalker in abt 1877 and had at least one child (Frank L Vandewalker).

10. George Jan Furman (29 Nov 1866-31 Apr 1915) who married Mary Ann Cosgrove on 22 Oct 1890 and had at least four children (Aleaze Furman, Sybil Furman, Antoinette Marie Furman and Carlton Furman).

11. Nelson Furman (28 Mar 1868-5 Nov 1868)

12. Hettie A Furman (15 Jan 1870-21 May 1940) who married Theodore Mabee in abt 1891.

13. Samuel Furman (8 May 1871-17 Jan 1957) who married Mary Ogden in 1896 and had at least two children (Thomas Furman and Ethel M Furman) and then married Elise L Young in around 1916.

*George & Margaret Furman were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Warwick, Orange Co., NY.  They are listed as members of the church in 1864.  Sons George is listed as a member as of 1878 and Jacob as of 1881.  Daughter Sarah Jane was baptized in the church as an adult on October 22, 1865 and son Samuel baptized as adult on Feb. 10, 1889.

Son Harvey Furman was married in the Methodist Episcopal Church in Edenville, Orange Co., NY to Hannah Brown on Dec. 18, 1880

1850-Shows Geo Firman  who is 28 and Margaret Firman who is 20. They also have someone else living with them that I can’t make out.
1860- Shows George Furman at 39 and a painter. Margaret is 29, Sarah J. is 10, Sidney is 6, Thomas is 5, William is 4, and Henry is 2.
1870- Shows George R Furman at 49 and is a painter. Margaret is 39. Sarah J and Sidney are not in the household at this time. Thomas is 14, Harvey is 11, Jacob is 8, Mary is 7, George Jan is 3, and Hettie is 3 months.
1880- Shows George at 58 and is still a painter, Margaret is 50. Thomas (who is 24) lives next door with his wife Sarah (who is 17). Thomas is a farmer. Still living with Margaret and George are Harvey who is 20, Jacob who is 17, Mary who is 16, George Jan is 13, Hettie is 10 and Samuel is 8.
