Nathan Fletcher was born in 1795 in Virginia to John Fletcher and Rachel Minter. He married Elizabeth Pruett on March 27, 1816 in Essex, Virginia. She was born around 1795 to Richard Pruett and _______. It appears that Nathan Fletcher moved from Virginia to California, while settling in Missouri for a time. Nathan Fletcher died in 1883 in Orange, California and Elizabeth died in the 1860′s.

Nathan and Elizabeth had at least four children:

1. Philip Tod Montague ( id hiter) L W Fletcher (14 Feb 1816-22 Oct 1907) who married Philadelphia Gordon and had at least four children (William F Fletcher, Emma Janetta Fletcher, Joseph H Fletcher and Robert A Fletcher).

2. Marion Martha Appaline Matilda Fletcher (8 Nov 1819-?).

3. Nathan Fletcher (1826-) who married Martha and had at least four children (Juliana Fletcher, John R Fletcher, Adda Fletcher, and unknown Fletcher).

4. John Fletcher (1829-1911) who married Catherine Cook and had at least seven children (Elizabeth Fletcher, Alice Fletcher, John Fletcher, Alexander Cook Fletcher, Rowland Fletcher, Jennette Louise Fletcher and Robert Warren Fletcher).

Census Records:

1850: In 1850 the family is living in Smith Township, Gentry, Missouri. Nathan is 57 and a blacksmith but cannot read or write. Elizabeth is 45 and also cannot read or write. Matilda is 30 and also cannot read or write. Also living with them are Martha Ann Fletcher who is 13 and Susan Fletcher who is 7.

1860: In 1860 the family is living in Tomales Township, Marion, California. Nathan is 66 and a farmer. His real estate is valued at 2,500 and personal estate is valued at 250. Elizabeth is 56. Also living with them are children John, Nathan and Matilda. (Age 32,34 and 39 respectfully). John and Nathan both have a personal estate of 4,500 a piece. There are two children with Fletcher last named but I can not read the names. Also living there is Anderson Sile who is 26 and from Ireland.

George Richard Blick was born on August 7th, 1842 in Brunswick County, Virginia to Elijah H.H. Blick and Margaret Jackson Arrington. He married Martha Ann Cornelia Lucy on January 4rd, 1865. She was born in August 1844 to Samuel Lucy and Martha Hardaway. George Richard Blick died on June 10th, 1909 and Martha died on December 8th, 1908.

George and Martha had at least 14 children:

James Blick and Catherine Lanier

James Blick was born in April 5th, 1755 in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. He was the son of Benjamin Blick. He first married Sarah Baugh on Nov 26th 1785. She was the daughter of James and Sarah Baugh. He then married Catherine Lanier on the 27th of April 1787 in Brunswick County, Virginia. She was born around 1767 in Brunswick to William Lanier and Elizabeth Burch. James died on the 29th of October 1837 in Brunswick County, Virginia. His wife Catherine died before 1834. James fought in the Revolutionary War.

The will of James Blick:

In the name of God Amen, I James Blick of the County of Brunswick and State of Virginia, being in perfect mind, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in named and form? Following: First I give to my son Hiram H Blick all my land and the following Negroes to wit, Solomon, Alexander, Allen, Johnson, Belvidia, Jinny, Morgiana, Thomas, Rhody, Mary, Melinda, Cynthia, ? and Judith and their increase, to him and his heirs forever, On this Condition, that he will maintain and support my unfortunate son Benjamin during his life. Second, I give to my son William B Blick, the following Negroes to wit: Patty, ? and child Charles, Ned, Jacob, and Sam and their increase to him and his heirs forever. Third, I give to my daughter Eliza Tisdale the following Negroes to wit: Aggy, Maclin, Harriett, Eveily, Jones, Rose, Anne, Joe and Poter and their increase to her and her heirs forever. Fourth, I give to my granddaughter, Sarah E Tisdale, daughter of Shirley Tisdale, the following Negroes to wit: Hannah, Willis and Henry and their increase, and one curtain bed stead?, bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever. I constitute and appoint Hiram H Blick Guardian for Sarah E Tisdale to retain the above named slaves and manage them in any way he may think best for her benefit, until she marries or arrives to the age of twenty-one, and then delivers them to her. Fifth, I give to my grandson William J Tisdale a good horse, Saddle and bridle, and one hundred dollars to him and his heirs forever. Sixth, it is my will and desire that my old women Grace and Lucy, shall be supported and maintained out of my estate, and all the balance and increase of my estate, I leave to be equally divided between Hiram H Blick, William B Blick and Eliza Tisdale. Lastly, I herby constitute and appoint Hiram H Blick my executer, and require no security to this my last will and testament given under my hand and seal this 6^th day of October 1837.

The pension application James Blick for the Revolutionary War (which was transcribed and annotated by C. Leon Harris) states,”That he was born in the County of Dinwiddie in Virg’a. but when he was very small his father moved to Brunswick County, where he has resided ever since; that in the month of March 1776 he enlisted as a regular Soldier under the State of Virginia, that after the Declaration of Independence they were transferred to the Continental Line, and served his term of Two years in the 4th Regiment commanded by Col Stephens [sic: Adam Stephen], and, on his promotion, by Col. [Robert] Lawson, and attached to Gen’l. Stephens’s Brigade; the company to which he was attached was commanded by Capt. James Lucas, 1st Lieut John Stith 2d Lieut. Wm. Rogers [William Rogers], & Nath’l. Lucas [Nathaniel Lucas] Ensign, that he entered the service in Brunswick, and marched thro’ Southampton, by Suffolk to Norfolk, and from thence in the course of the summer perhaps in August, our Regiment went up Chesapeake Bay, to the Head of Elk [now Elkton MD], & thence marched by Land to Wilmington in Delaware. took water there & landed at Trenton in New Jersey; thence marched to join the main army under Gen’l. Washington, was in the Battle at Trenton [26 Dec 1776], when the Hessians were captured, and also in a subsequent engagement at the same place when the British Army attacked Gen’l. Washington, in this action he rec’d. a very dangerous wound in the abdomen – that he was also in the Battle at Princeton [3 Jan 1777], when the gallant Gen’l. [Hugh] Mercer was slain. that he faithfully served out his his two years and was discharged honorably at Valley Forge – which document he brought home, and put it in his father’s desk, and supposes it must have been lost or casually destroyed, as he has never seen it since. He also states that after his return home, he volunteered, & marched with Capt. Joseph Greenhill’s troop of volunteer troopers to join Gen’l. [Nathanael] Greene’s army, and took part in the memorable Battle of Guilford Court House [15 Mar 1781], under the immediate command of Col. Wm. Washington [William Washington] – that he served in this expedition eight or ten weeks.”

Census Records:

In 1810, James Blick is living in St. Andrews Parrish in Brunswick County, Virginia with the following people: 2 free white males under age 10, 1 free white male age 16-25, 1 free white male over age 45, 1 free white female age 16-25 and 53 slaves.

In 1820, James Blick is living in St. Andrews Parrish in Brunswick County, Virginia with the following people: 1 free white male age 16-18, 2 free white males age 16-26, 2 free white males age 26-45, 1 free white male age 45+, 1 free white female age 45+,10 male slaves under age 14, 10 male slaves under age 14-26, 10 male slaves under age 26-45, 1 male slave over age 45, 12 female slaves under age 14, 9 female slaves under age 14-26, 5 female slaves under age 26-45, and 3 female slaves over age 45. That is a total of 60 slaves. 18 people are engaged in agriculture in the household.

Josie T Goodrich was born on July 8th, 1856 to Thomas Goodrich and Mary Blick in Greensville County, Virginia. She first married Thomas B Parham who was born around 1841. She then married Madison Green Duke. He was born around 1826 to Thomas Duke and Mary Bobbitt. He died in June 1888. She then married James T Meadows who was born around 1850. Josie died on the 18th of August 1909.

2. Ella A Goodrich was born on 3 Aug 1854 to Thomas Goodrich and Mary Blick. She married Isham Cheatham Rowland on the 25th of January 1870 in Greensville County, Virginia. He was born on the 10th of March 1848 to Horace Rowland and Martha Cheatham. Ella died on September 10th 1925 and Isham died on April 4th, 1915 in Vance, North Carolina.

They had at least six children:

Olvia Vertine Watkins was born on May 2nd, 1876 in Warren County, North Carolina to James Rives Watkins and Martha Talley. She married Thomas Judkins Stallings on April 18th 1899 in Warren, North Carolina. He was born around 1858 to James and Caroline Stallings. Oliva died on March 15th 1962. I am unaware of Thomas’ death at this moment. Thomas was a farmer.

1900: Can’t find them yet.

1910: Thomas J Stallings is 56 and a farmer. Oliva is 33 and they have been married for 11 years. She has had five children and they were all living at the time of this census. Everyone and their parents were born in North Carolina.

1920: Thomas is 66 and is still a farmer. Oliva is 43. All their children except Mrytle are still living with them.

1930:

William A Blick was born around 1839 to Elijah Blick and Margaret Arrington in Brunswick, Virginia. He married Martha E Short on December 19th 1860. She was born around 1840 in Brunswick, Virginia to William Short and Martha Harris. He was a confederate soldier who lost his life in the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3rd, 1863 at age 24. Martha Short then remarried John Myrick on the 18th of December 1866. He was born on the 14th of August 1832 in Greensville County, Virginia. Martha died before 1877 because John had married Rebecca Frances Short (who was born around 1846) on April 11th, 1877. Her parents were John Cincinatus Short and Ann C Perkins.

William and Martha had at least one child:

1. William H Blick (1861-18 July 1882).

Martha Short Blick and John Myrick had at least two child:

1. Katherina Franziska Huber was born on the 27th of November 1857 to Felix Huber and Franziska Zurmuehle in Giswil, Switzerland. She came to America in 1874. She married Rudolph Louis Bernhardt in 1877. He was born in Berlin, Germany on the 14th of May 1846 to Carl Ludwig Eduard Bernhardt and Emilie Freiederike Pauline Meyer and came to America in 1863. Rudolph Louis Bernhardt’s first wife was named Brenda Matson who was born in Gernada, Mississippi. He married her on the 15th of September 1870. It is presumed she died around 1872. Louis was an organ builder. Katherina died in the 1910′s. The family lived in Newark, New Jersey. Louis Bernhardt then married his next wife Olga and lived with her in Philadelphia while operating a musical instrument store. Louis died in 1929 or early 1930.

1880: William is 35 and a blacksmith. Rachel is 31 and keeps house. The family is living in 912 West Cary Street in Richmond, Va. Alice is 11 and at school, Ellen is 9 and in school as well, Mary is 8, Etta is 3 and Thomas is 1.

1900: William is 55 and still a blacksmith. Rachel is 52. She has had 11 children with 8 still living. The family is renting a house at 1 South Plum Street in Richmond. Ellen is still living at home at 28 and is a box maker. Mary is also still at home at age 25 and is also a box maker. Etta is 22 and works at a printing office. Thomas is 21 and is a blacksmith. William is 18 and a trunk maker. Herbert is 15 and also a trunk maker. Linwood is 12 and at school.

1910: William is 66 and does not work. Rachel is 62. The couple has been married for 44 years. Rachel has had 11 children with 7 still living. Also living with them are son William who is 27 and a brick layer. His wife Grace is also living there. Herbert is 24 and a bricklayer as well. Ellen is 37 and a table girl. Mary is 35 and also a table girl. Etta is 32 and does not work.

1920: William has died and Rachel is 71. She is living on 1807 West Main Street with her son Herbert who is 33 and a bricklayer. Also living there are her daughters Ellen (who is 48 and a box maker), Mary (who is 46 and a Packer) and Etta (who is 42 and does not work).

Robert Allen Brown was born on 30 Aug 1859 in Richmond, Virginia to Thomas and Kate Brown. He married Agnes Finn on the 8th of June 1897 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Agnes Finn was born in 1863 in Chicago, Illinois. She died on the 23rd of January 1927 in Chicago, Illinois. Robert Brown died on the 17th of November 1925 in Chicago. It appears that Robert Brown was a painter for the Pullman company in Chicago.
