Died of Paralysis

Mrs. M.V. Vonderlehr, the lady who was stricken with paralysis Friday morning while visiting her sister, Mrs. C. Gregory, on Chelsea Hill, died yesterday. She was in the forty-eighth year of her age. The funeral will take place from St. Mary’s Catholic church this afternoon at 4 o’clock.

1880: Augustus has died. Virginia is living at 208 East Marshall Street with the children. Eleanor is 17, August is 11, and Bertha is 9.

James William Watkins and Josephine Owen

James William Watkins was born on 23 Mar 1856  in Warren, North Carolina.  His parents were James Rives Watkins and Martha Talley. He married Josephine S Owen on 21 Oct 1878 in Mecklenburg, Virginia. She was born on 3 Jun 1855 in Mecklenburg, Va to William T Owen and Susan Hudson. Josephine died in 1936. James William Watkins died on 21 July 1926.

James William Watkins and Josephine Owen had at least six children:

Emma Josephine Watkins (06 May 1880-22 Oct 1961) who married Emmett Spencer Goodrich on 11 Jun 1900 and had 5 children (Maude E Goodrich, Clinton Goodrich, Roland R Goodrich, Ola T Goodrich, and Mary Frances Goodrich). She then married Washington Payne and had one more child (Gilbert Young Payne).

2. Mattie Eugene Watkins (29 Aug 1882- 19 Sep 1965) who married Sidney Gray Edwards on 21 Dec 1898 and had at least 4 children (Lewis Edwards, Eva Eugene Edwards, Willie Floyd Edwards, and Minnie Gray Edwards).

1900: J.W. Watkins is 44 and a night worker in a cutting mill. Josephine is 44 and keeps house. Emma J Watkins is 20, Blanche Watkins is 14, Irene Watkins is 11, James W Watkins is 9, and Earnest Watkins is 6.

1910: James W Watkins is 54 and a farmer, Josephine is 55 and keeps home. Their daughter Blanche Watkins is also living at home. Jinnie Watkins (I think they mean James) is 19 and Earnest Watkins is 17. Also living with them is James Carson who is 10 and a servant.

1920: James Watkins is 63 and a farmer. Josephine Watkins is 65 and keeps house. Also living with them is their 27 year old son James Watkins.

1930: Josephine Watkins is now widowed and 75. She is living with her daughter Mattie Edwards and her husband Sidney Edwards. Also living there is Mattie and Sidney’s child Eva (who is 24) who is married William R Lerner who is 26 and a salesman.

1870: Benedict Seelman is 46 and a laborer with 3000 worth of real estate and 100 worth of a personal estate. Julia is 48. Their children living with them include; Joseph Seelman who is 18 and works in a livery stable, Frank Seelman who is 15 and works in a tin shop, Lousia Seelman who is 12, Charles Seelman who is 10 and at school, and Julia Seelman who is 8 and also at school.

1880:  Julia Seelman is widowed, age 58 and a retail grocer. Also living with her are her children Joseph Seelman who is 27 and a laborer, Charles Seelman 20 and Julia Seelman who is 18.

Matilda Halter and Daniel Becker and Jacob Christiansen

Matilda Halter was born abt 1859 in Newark, NJ to Henry Halter and Regina Huff. She first married Daniel Becker on 9 Jun 1878 in Newark, NJ. Daniel Becker died on 26 Apr 1889 in Newark, NJ. She then married Jacob Christiansen on 13 Dec 1891 in Newark, NJ. He died in the between 1900-1910. It is unknown at this time when Matilda died.

1910: Record is pretty unreadable.

1920: Matilda Christiansen is 60 and a widow. Her son Charles Becker is 32 and a jeweler. He daughter Matilda Christiansen is also living with her.

Robert R Barclay and Ellen Sheshey

Robert R Barclay was born abt 1869 in Paterson, New Jersey to Henry Barclay and Margaret McElroy. He married Ellen Sheshey on 29 Aug 1894 in Paterson, New Jersey. She was born on 22 Dec 1871 in Malta t0 Joseph Sheehey and Maria Glorstern. Ellen died on 12 Feb 1923 in Paterson General Hospital and is buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Totowa, NJ. Robert died on 17 Dec 1912 due to pneumonia. He was a bartender when he got married. He operated a second hand store at the time of his death.

Barclay- In this city on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 1912, Robert, beloved Husband of Helena Barclay. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral on Friday, December 20, 1912 from his late residence, No. 26 Pearl street, at 9 o’clock a.m. and from St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic church at 9:30 o’clock a.m. High requiem mass. Internment at Holy Sepulchre.

Robert Barclay, a well known local business man, passed away Tuesday morning at St. Joseph’s Hospital a victim of pleura-pneumonia after an illness of only four days. The deceased was engaged in the furniture business at the corner of Auburn and Pearl streets for the past eight years and was well known about town. He was a brother of Theodore Barclay, proprietor of the Hotel Manhattan and also a brother of Edward and Hugh E. Barclay. Mr. Barclay is survived by his widow and three children. Arthur, Margaret and Hazel Barclay. The deceased married Miss Helena Sheehy, the former caretaker at the Paterson Orphan Asylum.  Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning from his late residence 26 Pearl street at 8:30 o’clock and a half hour later from St. Joseph’s R.C. church. The deceased was 48 years of age.

1900: Robert Barclay is listed as being born in 1869 (age 30) and a silk weaver. Helena/Ellen is listed as being born in 1871 (age 28) in England. The children are Martha (age 5), Margaette (age 3), and Hazel (age 1).

1910: Robert Barclay is listed as being 40 and a furniture dealer. His wife Helena is listed as being 38 and a furniture buyer which leads me to believe they own a store together (when he died in 1912 his occupation was operating a second hand store). They have been married for 16 years 3/3 children living with them. They are Martha who is 15, Margaret May who is 14 and Hazel E who is 12. Helena is listed as immigrating to the United States in 1892 from England. They live on Pearl Street in Paterson, New Jersey.

1920: Helen Barclay is widowed and age 48. She is a general merchandise dealer. Also living with her is her daughter Mita Barclay (Martha) who 24 and a towel weaver. Her daughter Margaret is married to Edwin Shuiant? who is a butcher. A Rose Reary who is 6 is also living there. Two boarders (John Russelle [age 53] and Nephe Whitehead [age 56]) are also living there.

Hugh E Barclay and Anna Turner

Hugh E Barclay was born on 20 Oct 1869 in Paterson, New Jersey to Henry Barclay and Margaret McElroy. He married Anna Turner on 19 Oct 1897 in Haledon, Passaic, New Jersey. She was born around 1873 to Owen Turner and Naomi Hampshier. George W. Turner was a witness to her wedding. Hugh E Barclay died on 13 Dec 1917 in New Jersey State Hospital in Morris Plains, New Jersey. He is buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Totowa, NJ. On his death certificate it listed his as single. He died of Paretic Dementia.

They had at least seven children:

1. Amanda Warburton (1834-10 May 1860) who married Joseph Eubank on 30 Dec 1852 and had at least two children (Marcella Eubank and William Eubank).

3. Susan Warburton (abt 1840-29 Dec 1874) who married William F. Fletcher on 9 May 1860 and had at least five children (Florence E Fletcher, William E Fletcher, Nannie Bell Fletcher, Ida A Fletcher and Ella Maud Fletcher).

4. Rosina Warburton (16 Jan 1842-14 Dec 1910) who married Lewis Marcus Ford on 4 Dec 1867 and had at least two children (Bunyan Ford and Hetta Ford).

Also living with Charles Warburton is his daughter Susan Fletcher and her family. Also his grandchildren (Marcella and William Eubank) from Amanda Eubank (who had died earlier that year).
